What is an Overland Flow Assessment and why is it important?
Overland flow is water that runs across land after rainfall, either after leaving a watercourse as flood water, before it enters a watercourse as runoff, or from rising naturally to the surface from underground. The water flows overland to a larger waterway, typically following flow paths that lead to major creeks and rivers. In highly urbanized areas, overland flow paths may represent what used to be a creek, but which is now a pipe and road network.
Without proper solutions to manage the overland flow of excess water, flooding may occur, which can be dangerous, damage property, and/or affect the structural integrity of a site.
An Overland Flow Assessment analyses water flow paths to inform on constraints for the site and to propose suitable solutions for managing the excess water and enhancing drainage for the area.
